The 21-year-old explains: “During my three-year course at Sheffield Hallam University I studied a wide range of methods for testing sports equipment, including that used for tennis, cricket and football.

“But having spent a summer working in Ireland, for my dissertation I analysed hurls – the wooden sticks used in the Gaelic sport of hurling – identifying their ‘sweet spots’, which, like on a tennis racquet, is the best place to strike the ball without causing vibration.

“It’s an unusual topic to know so much about, but by researching the methods of testing I have a good insight into the rigorous standards which companies such as Notts Sport use.”

His mastery of the detailed science of sport is lending itself to his new work, developing and testing synthetic surfacing systems for sports grounds, practice surfaces, children’s play areas and landscape installations

Nick divides his time between producing meticulous computer drawings of each client’s specific surface system and testing new products at the company’s specially equipped premisis.

He also has the opportunity to travel, testing new installations supplied by Notts Sport at locations around the world.
