Fields in Trust launches new publication

Pressure on land in the UK has never been greater and  the important role recreational space has to play in creating healthy communities is widely acknowledged. In light of these often conflicting facts Fields in Trust is delighted to be producing its iconic publication The Six Acre Standard in a new incarnation fit for the 21st century.

Planning and Design for Outdoor Sport and Play continues to uphold  the original FIT recommendation that 6 acres of recreational space is required for every 1000 people – a benchmark which has become the accepted industry-wide standard since its inception in the 1930s. It also provides a detailed framework of the issues relating to quantity, quality and accessibility of outdoor facilities for sport and play  and the importance of local assessments and standards.

Produced in a binder format for ease of use and subscription updates, the new edition addresses the sustainability agenda and its impact on the long-term provision of recreational space.   Planning and Design for Outdoor Sport and Play is a vital tool for all town planners, architects, local authorities, property developers and anyone else with a professional interest in sport, play or recreation provision.

Alison Moore-Gwyn, Chief Executive of Fields in Trust says: ‘Access to recreational space is a fundamental requirement and can positively impact on communities in all sorts of ways ranging from helping to promote social cohesion and reducing youth crime to being a way of addressing the rising tide of obesity. At FIT we know the impact of recreational space is profound and so it is vital that this message is heard by the people at the beginning of the planning chain who can really effect change and ensure that recreational space is a planning priority.’

Published on 1st August 2008 Planning and Design for Outdoor Sport and Play is available from Fields in Trust for £95.
FIT members can purchase copies for £75.
