Commuting by cycle – Dave gets into top gear

A company director from Pontefract has become the first in his organisation to join a new government initiative to promote cycling to work.

David Brady, Design Director at Sutcliffe Play, a leading designer and manufacturer of children’s playground equipment, has swapped his company car for a company bike as part of the national Cycle to Work scheme.

47 year old David now cycles the 12 mile journey to and from work on a new bike, complete with waterproof kit for himself and his laptop.   David started cycling to the office at Upton when he found an old bike in his shed last spring, but the government incentives now mean he is fully kitted out with new equipment for the winter.

The Cycle to Work scheme allows employees to benefit from a long term loan of bikes and commuting equipment such as lights, locks, and panniers completely tax free.

David who has worked at Sutcliffe Play for 20 years says his journey to work is much more enjoyable now: “I lead the environmental team at Sutcliffe Play so it seemed a good fit to cycle to work.  It seemed crazy to drive when I live so close and I can get the exercise I need without having to go to the gym, plus I am much better off financially.

“Cycling is a refreshing change and sometimes I cycle the long way home just to enjoy the scenery and appreciate the outdoors. I have got a very positive reaction from colleagues so I think some of them may be joining the scheme too.”

Sutcliffe Play takes pride in taking a responsible attitude towards the environment and has won two awards for its conscientious green approach. Sutcliffe Play received the Groundwork West Yorkshire Waste Minimisation Award in the West Yorkshire Environmental Awards for Business and the Business and the Environment Award at the first Wakefield District Business Awards.
